UGC vs animated ads: which should you run on Meta and TikTok?

Short answer: run both, for different jobs. UGC (user-generated content) ads, where a real or AI-generated person talks to camera, are strongest at social proof. Animated character ads are strongest at stopping the scroll and building a recognizable brand face. Most growing brands use UGC to convince and animation to get noticed and remembered.

What each format is

  • UGC ads look like a customer filmed them: a person talking to a phone, unboxing, reviewing or demonstrating. They come from paid creators or, increasingly, AI avatar tools that generate realistic people.
  • Animated ads tell a short story with cartoon characters: a mascot, a cartoon founder, a talking product. AI tools like Waffle Studio now produce them from a website in minutes.

Side-by-side

  • Attention in the first second: UGC blends into feeds that are mostly UGC. Animation is a visual pattern interrupt.
  • Trust and social proof: UGC wins. A real-looking person vouching for a product is persuasive.
  • Brand recall: animation wins when the same character appears in every ad. Recognition compounds.
  • Cost per concept: creator UGC costs a fee per video plus product shipping. AI tools of both kinds cost a monthly subscription.
  • Speed: creator UGC takes days to weeks. AI UGC and AI animation take minutes.
  • Creative fatigue: both fatigue. Animation refreshes easily because the same character can star in endless new stories and styles.
  • Claims and compliance: UGC testimonials can drift into claims you have to police. An animated story is scripted, so every line is approved before rendering.

When to use UGC

  • Mid- and bottom-funnel retargeting where trust closes the sale
  • Products that need demonstration on a real body or in a real home
  • Categories where authenticity is the whole pitch

When to use animated ads

  • Top-of-funnel prospecting where attention is the bottleneck
  • Crowded categories where every competitor runs the same UGC
  • Explaining something abstract, like software, a service or an ingredient
  • Building a mascot that carries across ads, social, email and packaging
  • Brands where nobody wants to be on camera

How to test both

Run them as separate creative concepts in the same campaign so the platform can allocate spend. Give each format at least three hooks, since the hook decides most of the result. Keep the offer identical so you're testing the format, not the deal. Then compare the metrics that matter for each job: thumb-stop and hold rate for attention, and cost per result for conversion.

Making animated ads without a studio

Waffle Studio turns your website into a finished animated ad: it builds your brand kit, designs a character that belongs only to your brand, writes the story and renders a vertical video with voices and captions.
